So its been awhile since we did a blog entry, Mainly because we have been studying SEO and taking full advantage of your robots.txt to help get better results.
It came to our attention because we had all the SEF turned on, Google still was indexing none SEF urls.
We had 758 pages indexed. Now every day we are seeing pages vanish (thats our goal)
First off if you didnt know, Install xmap it generated a sitemap not only for your site but it gives you an xml built on the fly that can be submitted to google, yahoo, ask and msn and several other sites.
You can also add this to your robots.txt
Sitemap: http://www.joomlamafia.com/index.php?option=com_xmap&sitemap=1&view=xml&no_html=1
Whats this do? Every time a bot comes to your site it looks at robots.txt to know what not to index and what to index... It just found out first thing is all bots this applies to, heres my sitemap, heres all my pages!!! But if any of these links are present (which we know they are not because this is what all our viewers of our site get to see when they click sitemap link)
Next thing we added was
Disallow: index2.php
and then
Disallow: /component/content/article/* Disallow: /component/search/*
Disallow: /component/*
This keeps any component pages from getting indexed, as well as any search pages and the firt keeps the articles in none sef format from being indexed and causing double content.
How Can I Apply This To My Site?
Regularly check what kind of pages Google is indexing on your site and look for patterns. If there are a lot of PDF pages, or dozens of useless links from a particular component, you can act quickly to block them out with robots.txt. Use the site:mydomain.com search function or a tool such as WebCEO.com.
Among the most important things you can do is check your pages that are in Google's supplemental index. This is where you'll find lots of your low-quality pages, ripe for removal by robots.txt. If the pages don't contain useful information, dump them.
Originally the wildcard wasn't supported by robots.txt but that has since changed. Both Google and Yahoo now recognize it: Regularly check what kind of pages Google is indexing on your site and look for patterns.

626,993 is our new ranking according to Alexa. Not to shabby for a 23 day old site.
In other News. We have submitted Mafia Icons into JED

We should soon have a Google Page Rank, They crawled the site and updated the index yesterday morning. We now have over 400 pages in the google index.

We also have one new module thats ready for release and our Ico Ad System 'Mafia Icons' is nearly ready for release, We should have a products Menu Item up with in the next 24 hours to list off what all we have available.

If you havent heard of Alexa, Its a site amazon started. The stats are interesting, even more so interesting that:
1. It only counts the people who have their tool bar installed into their browser.
2. The tool bar does not work on Vista Computer yet.
3. From what I can tell they dont have one for Mac OS X (Im using a Mac unless Sparky is the equivilant
4. They don't have one available from what I can tell for any Linux systems,
Well as we all may or may not know, A big / h-u-g-e / LARGE portion of people that use joomla being its an open source thing, Also us open source Operating Systems. Linux
If they dont have a version for linux, which a large amount of my traffic comes form is on Linux. Yet I still went from a 9,xxx,xxx traffic 7 week Average. when I went to bed last night (Sunday Night) that Monday morning, I jumped 4 million plus ranks, and then by the time I drove to Mountain View California around the corner from Google Head Quarters. I was at 890K I get home just slightly before midnight (mind you i been online maybe 20 minutes all day because I was dealing with Clients hotels and I meet up with Nathan owner of DownDoggy.com and had lunch with him at Aqui where we discussed the future modules and components JoomlaMafia is about to release and we discussed the Joomla meet up tomorrow in the bay area and the one next month at Google HQ.

We have a lot of interesting plans developing for this site. Soon we will have IRC built into the site to send people to the #joomla Freenode network channel. We have Several NEVER before seen components for Joomla... They simply don't exsist at all. We are going to be adding a forum once membership levels get built up to actually call for it. Please people if you like this site, Join, and digg the articles, social book mark the site, help us drive up traffic. I will be giving everyone a discount that has joined the site before we release any commerical components, If commerical chances are we will have a free version thats a bit limited but we plan to make our pricing very affordable, Chances are you wont ever see a price for anything above $50. Most our stuff will be $5-10 price range.
We will be adding a ton of video tutorials only available to people who are registered. We will be having how to buy a domain name, set it up with cpanel, and have joomla 1.5.3 installed in less then 5 minutes and adding content. Lots of cool and exciting new features coming, If your a PHP programmer, or have expeirance in template development, are really good with XHTML or CSS and have developed components please contact us. We are looking for these sorts of people even people to help write articles or do the tutorials videos. We are more then just JoomlaMafia, JoomlaMafia is just on of many (over 40) websites
So I am hard at work trying to promote this site some. I found a cool site called Best Of Joomla they have a lot of useful information on ad ons and show off other joomla sites, So I submitted mine go check it out and help my site out.
Google Site Map has been done before this site even had a logo really, so has submitting the url
Google Analystics are going along with quantcast and woopra and my own awstats.
Added a bot called DrBot to the #joomla channel and its logging now and making a stats page found in the title
So today going on our 2nd day and 300 guest online, 60 plus registered members and a dozens of people wanting to advertise on this site, I have added social book marking module from
Joomladigg. Great little add on for the correct types of sites and you know what the greatest part of it is? Its FREE!
--Update July 16 2008, We had issues with that Joomladigg ad on, so we made AddThis into a Joomla Module, no one else has done this yet. We are the first yet again!

We have also just purchased
Jom Comment it to kicks ass allowing users to comment on everything on your site. As well as this blog section, Its Powered by
MyBlog very Web 2.0 I really recommend both these products to anyone needing these kind of features on their own site thats like community driven with content. Business wise it could be used for testimonials (
Jom Comment) as long as you set it to approve each comments that are entered and no matter what site you have, its good to sign up for word press and get the API key for
MyBlogFurther more. I added google ads mainly just to fill some space until I figure out what else to do with that empty spot I had plus it helps me make a little something to help pay this $140 a month dedicated server bill, Always feel free to donate money. Its set so you specify the amount every penny helps.
