Its been awhile

Posted by mmurphy in Untagged

Its been awhile since I made a blog entry, I been having horrible Internet problems and have decided to brake my lease and go to court over this matter as the phone lines do not work in this unit and comcast has really old wiring and cant replace it without doing the entire building and they wont let them.

This is just a partial reason for breaking my lease 2 months early...

So this Saturday the 27th 2009 I am moving into a new place.

Shortly after getting moved you should have the new forum up, JomSocial Installed and User profiles and JoomlaMafia will be a bit more social. We are also going to be running some big promotions and adding an affiliate system to the site.

Please give me some ideas for Profile types related to Joomla, I am thinking Developer, End User and stuff like that, sort of like myspace has producers, bands and regular folks...  Email these ideas at mmurphy at joomla nospace mafia dot com subject Profile Types

Today Azrul.com has announced MyBlog 3.0 has been released.

"Today, we’re excited to announce the release of MyBlog 3.0 (for Joomla 1.5+)—a major upgrade to Joomla’s most popular (and powerful) blogging component, MyBlog.

In addition to power-blogging favorites such as advanced templating; easy image editing; RSS Feeds, trackbacks, Technorati pings & tags and more, MyBlog 3.0 now offers:

1. JomSocial Integration: MyBlog 3.0 is now fully integrated with our popular social networking component, JomSocial! If you are running JomSocial + MyBlog 3, your site's community members can now have their very own blogs accessible to all from their profile pages. In addition, members' blog posts will now show up in your community's Activity Stream, JomSocial Avatar support is included, and each member can accumulate "user points" with every blog post they make.

JoomlaMafia Getting Revamped

Posted by mmurphy in trafficSEOPRModuleMafia IconIco AdsIco Ad Joomlaalexa

For those who read the blog, You may now that this year we are going to have some changes. Some major, Some Minor.

This weekend we plan to close user registration and we are going to copy the database over and install a brand new Joomla 1.5.9 dump the database and import the copied one and totally overhall the site. Switching template, adding forum and getting the brand new downloads section online also going to redo a lot of the old articles. Drop a lot of the banners, Redo the Mafia Icon module to use a large icon to showcase that.

And we have several new free modules ... Well not new just never released them to the public. We are working on rewriting everything and really going to change how Mafia Icons works with a new concept. We are also going to start doing newsletters. As we never have sent a single newsletter once, and we have over 600 members. Several dozen have never loged in or activated there accounts, those people will be deleted.

JoomlaMafia.com is now 6 Months and 27 Days old. Its a PR5 with 42,031 inbound page links.

(e.g. you will be able to submit a psd that you want converted into a template/module/component) and they will do it.

For a sample of work recently done www.digitalchow.com was a Joomla 1.0.13 site, With a template from Template Plazza that was 1.0 and did not work in 1.5 even with legacy mode turned on. Its now a Native 1.5 template and took the team not even 1 hour to complete.  Then they did component migration to the latest version of mosets tree as of 20 minutes about the sites running 1.5.9

So look forward to some more new products this year and services.

So Um Yeah...

Posted by mmurphy in T Boone PickensPresidentPickensOilForiegnBooneBill Cosby700 Billion Dollar700 Billion2008

This is something I just had to do and I don't want to really but its important to me and has nothing to do with Joomla or websites or computers.

It seems the only two people I hear about on TV is Obama and McCain. I think both suck. I will not vote for either one. Id write in bill cosby or Bill Gates or Steve Jobs or even better yet lets make  Chris Rocks movies come true.

This site isn't a political podium. This is the first time I have ever done anything like this and I am only doing it because I really think we need a change in our ways, we need a shake up and we need a wake up. I was surprised when several of my friends for multiple years I tried to talk to them about this and they told me they didn't care. Thats the problem that so many people think that they can't make a change that they are just not going to vote for either one.

Anyways instead of wasting a vote theirs been someone on our American TV's talking about foriegn oil. I know a lot of the people that come to my site are not from America and you probable could give a crap about America I know that  a lot of other countries hate us or atleast our goverment (I do) but instead of just complaining or ignoring it I told myself sunday night that I was going to spend most of yesterday and today to try to make a change.

And for you outside our boarders maybe you are thinking its about time someone tried to change things. See we do have some things in common, If you hate our goverment a lot of its citizens hate its goverment and not just in America. I know a guy in the UK that everyday all he does is give his local goverment crap, wont be to surprised one day they take him out for causing them so much grief.

I want to get T Boone Pickens from www.pickensplan.com to announce he is going to run and to help show him he has support for it. I put together a petition for us to sign.

Mr Pickens you talk about how we need to get the next administration office to take 22% of our natural gas power plants and put it to fuel use and replace with wind power in the middle of united states.  And devert that 22% usage to car fuel which would cut 38% of our foriegn fuel dependancy. Isn't it a sure thing that this could be seen happen if YOU where the big Commander and Chief?

You talk about how America spends $700 Billion a year on foriegn oil. Wait! Wait! Isn't that how much that  bail out plan is for that Bush is talking about? If we hadnt used forign oil for the past two years that been $1400 Billion Dollars we would still have so we wouldnt of had to borrow money from where was it? China?

Lets get someone in office that is spending a huge amount of his personal money with trying to fix our dependency of foreign oil, Did you know for the past few years we've spent $700 Billion a year on foreign oil? Isnt it kind of ironic that this new bail out deal for those 4 banks is also $700 Billion Dollars? We had to borrow money from another country. If we didn't depend on the oil from others for just the past two years. we would have $1400 Billion in the reserve and wouldn't of had to borrow any money... We are about to go into a new depression. Lets get someone into office that will really shake stuff up.

Please sign the Petition below and lets change some things.

http://www.petitionspot.com/petitions/BooneforPresident

I hope you sign this to help make a change for the better. Because America uses 25% of all oil just imagine how much green house gases that produces that doesn't just effect us. That effects you and your children and your childrens children and many more to come. Global Warming... If we started depending more on wind and Solar and alternative fuels this world would be a lot better to smell and see.

Ever think about this. You take a bucket of water and spin in around and the water stays in the bucket because of triffical force. What happens when 1 thing changes slightly? The water comes flying out... We are sucking natural gas out of the ground and oil... I am not an oil driller but whats replacing that oil or gas? Recently their was a place in Texas i think it was that all of a sudden the ground colapsed... Why? because they took out so much natural gas it caused the ground to become unstable... If we keep taking the oil out... We may have earth all of a sudden shack and go flying or the oceans fly out the ocean and whip out countries. I am done.

Robots.txt Update

Posted by mmurphy in trafficSEOPRlivegooglealexa

So its been awhile since we did a blog entry, Mainly because we have been studying SEO and taking full advantage of your robots.txt to help get better results.

It came to our attention because we had all the SEF turned on, Google still was indexing none SEF urls.

We had 758 pages indexed. Now every day we are seeing pages vanish (thats our goal)

First off if you didnt know, Install xmap it generated a sitemap not only for your site but it gives you an xml built on the fly that can be submitted to google, yahoo, ask and msn and several other sites.

You can also add this to your robots.txt

Sitemap: http://www.joomlamafia.com/index.php?option=com_xmap&sitemap=1&view=xml&no_html=1

Whats this do? Every time a bot comes to your site it looks at robots.txt to know what not to index and what to index... It just found out first thing is all bots this applies to, heres my sitemap, heres all my pages!!! But if any of these links are present (which we know they are not because this is what all our viewers of our site get to see when they click sitemap link)

 Next thing we added was

Disallow: index2.php

 and then

Disallow: /component/content/article/* Disallow: /component/search/*
Disallow: /component/*

This keeps any component pages from getting indexed, as well as any search pages and the firt keeps the articles in none sef format from being indexed and causing double content.

How Can I Apply This To My Site?

Regularly check what kind of pages Google is indexing on your site and look for patterns. If there are a lot of PDF pages, or dozens of useless links from a particular component, you can act quickly to block them out with robots.txt. Use the site:mydomain.com search function or a tool such as WebCEO.com.

Among the most important things you can do is check your pages that are in Google's supplemental index. This is where you'll find lots of your low-quality pages, ripe for removal by robots.txt. If the pages don't contain useful information, dump them.

Originally the wildcard wasn't supported by robots.txt but that has since changed. Both Google and Yahoo now recognize it: Regularly check what kind of pages Google is indexing on your site and look for patterns.

If there are a lot of PDF pages, or dozens of useless links from a particular component, you can act quickly to block them out with robots.txt. Use the site:mydomain.com search function or a tool such as  WebCEO.com

Among the most important things you can do is check your pages that are in Google's supplemental index. This is where you'll find lots of your low-quality pages, ripe for removal by robots.txt. If the pages don't contain useful information, dump them.

What is Page Rank? Why is it important?

Posted by 0 in trafficSEOPRpage rankingJoomla

As quoted by Google:

PageRank relies on the uniquely democratic nature of the web by using its vast link structure as an indicator of an individual page's value. In essence, Google interprets a link from page A to page B as a vote, by page A, for page B. But, Google looks at more than the sheer volume of votes, or links a page receives; it also analyzes the page that casts the vote. Votes cast by pages that are themselves "important" weigh more heavily and help to make other pages "important".

pagerankTake the following scenario.  You are a college student who needs to do a report about the Internal Revenue Service.    In your paper, it is very likely that you will cite the IRS as a source for your work.  And in much the opposite way, the IRS would be highly unlikely to cite your research paper in any of its work.

Google has taken this natural phenomenon as a way to measure the importance of every web page in its database.  The more your work is cited as a reference on other websites, the more credibility your work is given.

But it is not only quantity that is important, quality is a very significant player in this arena.  Take the two red smileys as an example.  Each of them only have a single reference...however those references come from very credible sources.  Because the quality of those reference is so much greater, this work is assigned a much higher credibility than those sites which receive a large amount of low quality references.

But why is it important?  Google uses Page Rank as a significant factor in organizing the results of a given query to its search engine.  Take the smiley example above and assume all these pages describe the same topic.  The green smileys have very little credibility since no others reference them.  The yellow smiley would be considered the most significant work on the topic as many others cite it as a reference.  If you want your website to rank in the search engines, page rank is one of the many critical fundamentals to understand.
